HISTORY OF THE INTERNET
In 1973 the U.S. Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) started to research technologies for interlinking packet networks.
This was called the internetting project, the system of networks was called the internet, and the system of protocols became known as TCP
By 1986 the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) started to develop the NSFNET which now provides a major backbone for the internet, (
other backbones include NSINET from NASA, ESNET from the U.S. Department of Energy). In Europe international backbones (e.g. NORDUNET) provided connection to over one hundred thousand computers
During the late 80's the use of the Internet and networks expanded and began to include commercial facilities, creating the Internet
that we know today.
